The Hispano-Jewish community was driven out of Spain into 1492 and out of Portugal in 1506 by the Inquisition. They subsequently took refuge and then settled in most parts of the Ottoman Empire, in particular Greece, Turkey, the Balkans. Later, they settled in Galilee, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Morocco, as well as in America. The Hispano-Jewish language is a mixture of Spanish, medieval Spanish and Hebrew, to which were added many elements borrowed from other cultures (Greek, Turkish, Bulgarian, Rumanian, Yugoslavian, Arabic) over the centuries.

The poems, which almost always speak of love, are naturally lyrical, nostalgic and passionate. They gave birth to very popular melodies in the Hispano-Jewish community. Numerous interpretations and transformations testify to the vivacity of a culture which keeps circulating throughout the Mediterranean world and taking in elements of other musical cultures. The poems are sung to the lute, the violin or the cymbalum and percussions (derbouka, zarb, to bendir).
Keeping alive the tradition, letting it evolve by itself: with that guideline in mind, Sylvie Cohen and François Cotinaud have adapted this above-mentioned repertoire to their Western instruments (the saxophone and the piano), by rearranging it, and allowing space for improvisation or variations.

"The romanceros, Ariadne's clew to the Hispano-Jewish culture, travel through time and space. Metamorphosed by Sylvie and Francois, they constitute a link between generations. " (Angèle Saül)
